A Flight of Pixels – Digital Migration Project
A Flight of Pixels: Digital Migration was an immersive digital exhibition I project managed at Mansfield Museum, developed as part of my ongoing work to explore new ways of digitally interpreting and presenting the museum’s collections.
The project reimagined the museum’s internationally significant natural history collection, particularly its bird specimens, using contemporary digital techniques. Instead of relying solely on traditional display cases, the exhibition used large-scale projection and video mapping to animate the gallery space, exploring themes of migration, movement and transformation.
I worked closely with VENT Media, led by digital artist Barret Hodgson, to develop and deliver the exhibition. The digital artwork combined animated projections, video mapping and sound to create an immersive experience that surrounded visitors and, in some cases, was projected directly onto bird specimens that are rarely seen on display. An original soundscape featuring bird song enhanced the multi-sensory experience.
Project managing A Flight of Pixels allowed me to test how digital art can sit alongside historic collections in a meaningful and respectful way, offering new layers of interpretation while increasing access and engagement. The exhibition demonstrated how immersive digital approaches can help museums connect collections with contemporary audiences in fresh and imaginative ways.
